Mexican Talavera
Talavera! The handcrafted pottery lovingly created by Mexican artisans has inspired
collectors and designers around the world with its colorful interpretations and distinctive
designs.
Dating to 16th Century Mexico, the term Talavera Pottery describes the faithful reproductions of ceramic pottery first created in the Spanish Village of Talavera de la Reina. A form of Majolica, today's Mexican Talavera reflects a diverse blend of cultural heritage from China, Renaissance Italy, the Moorish Empire, Spain and the indigenous peoples of Mexico. The city of Puebla is home to some of the oldest and most notable of Mexico's Talavera fabricas. Of these, Uriarte Talavera is perhaps the most renowned. First established in 1824, it is one of only 14 "certified" talavera fabricas in Mexico and is still operated by the Uriarte family in the original location. Other fine examples of Puebla Talavera pottery come from Armando Talavera. Though these pieces in the Colonial Talavera style do not meet the exacting standards of the certified fabricas, they are nonetheless highly sought after by Talavera Pottery lovers, and any piece can be ordered in any design. Yet another is Herandez Talavera, whose highly detailed and brightly colored creations are as addictive as they are affordable. All of our Mexican pottery is completey food and dishwasher safe. While plates and serving pieces can be placed in a warm oven, care should be taken not to subject them to extremes in temperature. They are meant to be used and enjoyed! Weather you are just starting your collection or in the fun process of adding to it, we welcome you to explore and browse our current Talavera offerings and invite you to contact us with any special requests or needs in the way of Mexican Talavera pottery.
